Almost 10 years ago, I started a life-changing journey, my journey to a whole new me.  At the time, my children were 2 and 4, and life seemed to be going according to plan.  Thanks to genetics, I am tall and have a lean build and a love for being active, so I never struggled with my weight.  I was not slim, but I was not at an unhealthy weight either.  Therefore, I felt free to eat as I pleased – what some call the Standard American Diet.  I paid no attention to eating fruits and vegetables, and I ate an abundance of processed, packaged, sugar and gluten filled foods.  My husband and I would be known to bake a yellow cake, frost it, and eat it for dinner!

Also thanks to genetics, I am blessed with a very sensitive system.  I have allergies to almost everything indoors and out.  At the time, it didn’t slow me down because I had about 4 medicines I took regularly to control my overactive immune system.  However, my body was only able to keep up with the demands I put on it for so long.

After my 30th birthday, something changed.  I woke up one morning with a bladder infection.  I’d never had one.  That’s no big deal I thought, as I ran up to the local medical clinic and loaded up on meds.  But 3 days later, the pain moved to my back.  I ended up in the hospital on IV antibiotics and then at home on antibiotics for almost 3 months, as the infection was persistent.  Suddenly, my body wouldn’t bounce back.  My addiction to processed sugary foods did nothing to help my body heal.  Still, I made no connection between my lifestyle and my health.

About 2 months after the infection, I ended up in the hospital with purple lumps up my neck and a swollen ear.  I was misdiagnosed at first as having a mastoid bone infection, but while in the hospital, blisters popped up on my ear – shingles.  Shingles!  I thought.  I’m 30 years old!  While alone in the hospital, I laid there feeling so defeated.  I prayed.  I knew there had to be another way to get healthy than to inject these antibiotics into me and take all this medicine.

I asked God to show me how I could get my body to heal because I knew He had more for my life than to be sick all the time.  I had a very wise friend give me some of the best advice – we need to take care of our bodies so that we are able to do the most for God and His kingdom during our time here.  Neglecting my body was paralyzing me from living the life He intended for me.

That began my journey to a whole new me.  For about 2 years, my body was in healing mode.  After 3 holistic practitioners told me I need to cut out wheat or gluten from my diet, I finally listened.  Even though I was trying to add in more fruits and vegetables, it was a process of healing my digestive system from years of white flour products and months of antibiotics.  I began devouring any holistic health books anyone would recommend to me.  I gained nuggets of wisdom from each one that aided in my healing.  After a few years of gathering up knowledge, I finally realized I could sum up all of these books with some very simple dietary truths and lifestyle changes:  eat whole foods:  fruits, vegetables, oils, nuts, seeds, eggs, and clean meats, and live a simple, balanced lifestyle.

I’m happy to say that 10 years later, I am no longer sick – pretty much ever, my allergies are almost non-existent, without any effort I dropped 15 pounds, and best of all, I have more energy and zest for living than I have ever had.  And, each year keeps getting better.

My family and friends really began to notice the changes to my body – physique, hair, skin, nails, etc – and the changes in my mood and energy level about 4 years ago.  Since then, I am the resident health nut around here, who loves to give out advice and talk about simple, healthy gluten free living.  I had finally found my passion.  After a year of praying about how God could use me and my journey to help others like me, I decided to enroll in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition®, where I was trained to be a holistic health coach and use my love and knowledge of healthy eating and lifestyle choices to change the lives of women just like me.  My education has equipped me with extensive knowledge in holistic nutrition, health coaching, and the importance of preventive care.  I have never before felt like something I was doing was more in line with who God created me to be and what His purpose is for my life.  It feels awesome, and I just want to share with everyone!
